New to New Jersey?
The licensure
process in NJ can be somewhat complicated. License applications may be obtained
by contacting the Physician Assistant Advisory Committee (PAAC); their contact
information is below. Completed applications should be returned to the PAAC
which meets monthly to review them. Instructions should be followed carefully as
incomplete applications will not be
considered until the following month. Applications must include current
passport-style photos, and applicant are required to undergo fingerprint
screening and a criminal history check. When an application meets the standards
of the PAAC, the NJ Board of Medical Examiners will issue a license valid for
two years.
New Graduates
The
application process for new graduates is essentially the same as above. Proof of
graduation is required from the student's program. Upon successful completion of
the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) the NCCPA will notify
the state and a license will be issued.
License Renewal
PA licenses
are renewed biannually in odd-numbered years. Renewal applications are mailed in
the early summer. New Jersey requires 40 hours of continuing every two years to
maintain licensure. IF YOU DO NOT ALSO RECERTIFY WITH THE NCCPA ON ODD-NUMBERED
YEARS, ensure that you complete these 40 hours prior to your state license
expiring. (For example, if you need to complete your 100 hours of CME to
recertify with the NCCPA for the cycle ending in 2010, make sure that you have
40 hours complete for your license renewal in 2009.)
Questions
concerning licensure may be directed to the PAAC - contact information is below.
NJSSPA is also always happy to try to assist you with licensure questions.
